Glacier National Park’s McDonald Creek Trail

After dropping off Emily and Gabe at Camp Bighorn, we thought a 2-hour drive to Glacier National Park was very doable. After all, the spectacular nature of this place was within close reach though we only had one full day to spend in the park. What to do?

Our AirBnB host suggested a hike along McDonald Creek Trail followed by a visit to an off-the-grid little establishment called Polebridge. Wow! We sure loved the views along this easy 5-mile out-and-back. [Hike details]

We entered the park near the Apgar Visitor Center and turned right to head up along the spectacular Lake McDonald. Once we passed the Lake McDonald Lodge we turned left on N Lake McDonald Rd. Just past the small bridge we parked on the right at the Johnslake Loop trailhead and jumped onto the well maintained trail that followed the creek. We had bear spray on hand, just in case, though the only wildlife we encountered was deer and a few birds along the swampy area.
